Asanda Gingqi became the African Boxing Union (ABU) super featherweight champion, after defeating Tony Rashid in a fight held on June 29 at the East London Orient Theatre in South Africa.
In front of his home crowd, Gingqi put on a solid and dominant performance to win the African regional belt. With this victory, the South African boxer takes an important step in his career and positions himself as one of the names to watch on the continental scene.
Tony Rashid, for his part, put up a fight but was unable to decipher Gingqi’s style, who took advantage of his rhythm and precision to prevail throughout the bout.
The event, held at the iconic East London venue, witnessed the rise of a new local champion who now has his sights set on greater challenges both on and off the continent.
Gingqi now has a record of 15-2, 9KO.
